Be Safe in the Kitchen

The kitchen is among our favorite areas at home. In fact, this is one of the first things we check when we hunt for a house. Although this is usually part of our favorite rooms in the house, we are aware of the threats and dangers found in the kitchen. Several things can hurt us and can cause injury. This is why we have to know how to stay safe in the kitchen. Learning and applying these things will help us prevent some serious problems at home.

One of the threats there is fire. Several things in the kitchen can cause fire like the fuel source for the cooking equipment. Electricity and petroleum can cause fire. The live flame used when cooking is also dangerous. This is why we have to be careful with where we place our things. Flammable objects and ingredients should be away from it. They can easily be caught in the flame from the cooking stove. Some of the several flammable objects you can find in the kitchen are the wooden spoon, the pot holders, the paper towels, cloths and wooden ladle.

Since there are several fire hazards in the kitchen, you should also be equipped with fire safety equipment. You should have a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket. You should mind where you place them as well. See to it that they are easy to access when a fire starts. You should not place it next to equipments that can probably start fire too.

When you are in the kitchen, fire is not the only thing you should worry about. Bear in mind that other things in there that can cause injury. An example would be the knife. It is sharp and pointed. If you are not careful with it, you can cut yourself and it can even lead to serious injury. This is why you need to store it properly. See to it that your children will not be able to access it and play with it. They could hurt themselves and others if they do.

The arrangement of your kitchen appliances can also affect the safety in the kitchen. See to it that you will not tip over the blender while you reach for the oven. The cooking stove should have enough height for you to reach as well. If you are not comfortable when using it, you can end up hurting yourself. You might also tip on some of the objects there that can cause further damage.

You should also have a house rule in terms of how to behave in the kitchen. Children should not play there. Even the adults should not be running around the kitchen island especially when someone is cooking. Most importantly, the person cooking should pay attention to what he is cooking to prevent burning it, which can eventually lead to fire.

The kitchen is our favorite area. However, we have to be careful when using it. To prevent problems, we need to be organized. We have to see to it that items that can be a threat to our safety should be stored properly.

Keeping Baby Safe in the Kitchen

With scalding hot oil, boiling water, and the oven set at 450 degrees, the kitchen can be one of the most hazardous rooms in your house for your baby. One of the best ways to prevent an accident is to keep the baby out of the kitchen all together by using a baby gate. However for some this idea might not be practical. Therefore, there are other ways to make your kitchen a safe place for your baby.

Preventing Burns

• To help safeguard your child from opening the oven when in use, purchase an oven lock.

• Install childproof knob covers on your stove if your knobs are reachable.

• Installing a stove guard on your stove can protect those little ones from touching the hot stove. Stove guards are made of heat-resistant plastic, which angles out from the stove creating a barrier to help protect little hands.

• Turn the handles of pots and skillets around so baby cannot reach them.

• Use the back burners for cooking when possible.

• Be sure to set your water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or below or use anti-scalding devices.

Keep Sharp Objects Out of Reach

• Keep your dishwasher shut when not in use since it can contain sharp objects that can cut the baby.

• Keep other utensils and knives out of reach of children.

• Never leave scissors, knives or other sharp objects on counter within reach.

Other Areas to Childproof

• Place locks on appliances such as refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.

• Keep electrical appliances such as toaster and blenders out of reach as curious babies may try and plug them in.

• Keep all cleaning supplies locked up or in an area inaccessible to baby.

• Place locks on cabinets and drawers.

• Put outlet covers in any outlets.

Don't Forget...

• Avoid using small magnets on your refrigerator as these can fall down and baby can choke on them.

• Keep cling wrap, large baggies and plastic bags out of reach as they pose a suffocation hazard for children.

• Don't have any stools or ladders in the kitchen as these can provide a vehicle for a child to reach things they shouldn't.

• Keep a lid on your trashcan or keep the trash out of reach. Trash can contain any number of hazards such as sharp metal can lids, plastic bags, or glass bottles.

• No place is ever completely childproof, so never leave child unattended in the kitchen.

Keep them Entertained

You spend a lot of time in your kitchen cooking and preparing food and then cleaning up. So keep the baby entertained while you are there and they are less likely to play with things they shouldn't. Set aside at least one cabinet for your child to open and explore. Pick a cabinet that's not too close to the stove and oven, and fill it with safe but interesting objects, such as lightweight saucepans, wooden spoons, foil pie plates, and empty yogurt containers. Surprise them by changing the contents from time to time.

Safe Step Stools for Auto Repair Shops

Mechanics working at dealerships and auto repair shops will use what ever is convenient to make their work easier, even if it’s unsafe; like using a milk crate instead of a step stool. The reason a technician would do this is because they think it might save them a little time. Milk crates are a poor choice for a safe step stool. Milk crates will tip over if the mechanic is standing on the edge trying to reach over. Milk crates have nothing on the bottom to keep them from sliding and they are not designed to stand on them.

Auto mechanics have a couple of choices when it comes to buying a safe step stool for their repair shops. Let’s take a look at a couple of the step stools to see which will work for your auto repair shop. “How can you get the best step stool for your shop?”

Which Step Stool Is Right For Me?

Let’s take a look at the shop step stools out here. The most popular step stools for auto repair shop are the hook over the wheel step, a heavy duty metal 2 step stool that has attachments like a tray for holding tools and then there’s a plastic stackable step stool. The hook over the wheel step has no legs, but you are limited to working on either side of the truck by the wheel. The metal 2 step stool is kind of big & heavy making it difficult to move around. The plastic step stool is light and pretty easy to move around. It comes in different sizes to fit your specific needs.

Do your mechanics work on 4×4 trucks?

Do you have different size trucks come into your service bays, like half-ton, 1-ton. 4×4’s? Are there different size employees servicing these trucks? You might want to consider which of the above designs works best for your shop. But before you purchase a safe step stool for your auto repair shop, ask yourself what’s important to you. Do you want a lightweight easy to move step stool? Are there specific problems with the step stool you are currently using? Is a warranty important? When you’ve answered these questions it will make your step stool decision much easier.
